Learn how US small-cap gappers really behave.

GapperDesk is a free education desk on gap-up momentum in US small caps: how these moves start, what they tend to look like, and why most of them fade. No live calls. No tips. Just the method and honest after-the-close reviews.

What is a gapper?

A gapper is a stock trading well above yesterday’s close, often on news, before or soon after the US open. In small caps these moves can be extreme in both directions, which is exactly why they are worth studying before risking a cent.

Gap

Price vs prior close

How far the stock is trading from yesterday’s regular-session close. The bigger the gap, the bigger the potential reversal.

Levels

Prior-day high & high of day

Where price sits relative to yesterday’s high and today’s high so far tells you whether a move is still extending or already fading.

Context

Float, volume, catalyst

Low-float, thinly traded names move fast on volume. A real headline matters; a price spike on its own is not a reason.

What the data showed

We studied 256 small-cap momentum alerts circulated by a third-party alert service between 1 Sep and 22 Oct 2026, measured against real exchange price data at the moment each alert went out. It describes what these setups looked like, not what you should trade.

Median price
$2.02

at the moment of the alert

Median move
+44%

vs the prior day’s close

Above prior-day high
94%

were trading above yesterday’s high

Closed lower
73%

closed the day below the price at the alert

Other study figures: median same-day close −12% vs the price at the alert; median lowest price over the next 3 days −31%; 49% of alerts came in pre-market; 43% of names had reverse split in the previous 180 days. Small sample (37 trading days). Past behaviour does not indicate future results.

The method, in four questions

Every GapperDesk lesson comes back to the same checklist. It is a way of reading a chart, not a signal.

  1. Is it a real gap?How far is price from yesterday’s close, and is it a listed stock (not OTC) in a sensible price band?
  2. Is it through the level? Is price above yesterday’s high, and how close is it to today’s high of day?
  3. Why is it moving? Is there a genuine catalyst, or is it just thin-float momentum that can reverse in minutes?
  4. What is the risk?Where would the idea be wrong, how wide are spreads, and how much of the move has already happened?
